Margaret Thatcher

Did you know that Margaret Thatcher used to visit Easton as a young woman? She was friends with the Estate secretary but sometimes had dealings with Lady (Cecilia) Cholmeley. It seems inappropriate to say it on the day of her funeral but there was no love lost between the two. According to Joan, who worked in the gardens, Lady Cholmeley came running up saying ‘Quick Joan, hide me, its that bl***y woman!’ and dived into the potting shed. Joan, now a very elderly lady, stood her ground. ‘Where is she?’ demanded the future prime minister ‘I know she’s here.’ ‘I don’t know’ came the reply in a broad west country accent ‘Why don’t you go and look up a bl***y tree?’
